Claim Technician

The primary objectives of this position, in the Claims Department, are to assist the Claim Handler in gathering and arranging documents such as medical records, consultant reviews, and legal documents for case preparation and analysis. The Claim Technician is also responsible for handling telephone calls from internal and external sources, preparing correspondence for the Claim Handler, and maintaining an independent diary to ensure proper file maintenance.
 
Duties for this position include:

  •  respond to telephone calls from policyholders reporting claims, obtaining pertinent information regarding the incident, preparing initial loss report, reviewing underwriting files on all new losses to determine coverage, starting a task in the e-filing system, and releasing the task for assignment;
  • send acknowledgement letters to claimants/claimant attorneys and policyholders on new claims;
  • request medical records from insured physicians, hospitals, and prior/subsequent treating physicians on reported claims;
  • review medical records and request consult reviews;
  • notify the appropriate state medical board of suit filings, expert reports, settlements and closings;
  • prepare letters on closed files;
  • input and maintain data in the Oasis system;
  • prepare correspondence for claims handler signature; and
  • handle numerous administrative tasks including but not limited to maintaining electronic diary, responding to telephone requests, assisting claims handler, preparing settlement and expense check requests, and maintaining electronic files.


Candidate must be able to communicate effectively, both in person and by phone, with other employees and outside callers. Should be skilled in English usage: spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Also skilled in Arithmetic.

Basic knowledge of medical/legal/insurance terminology preferred. Basic knowledge of insurance claim investigation/handling and ability to make decisions relating to same.

Must possess working knowledge of data base utilization. Proficient in Microsoft applications including Word and Excel. Should be analytical, detail-oriented, and have problem-solving skills.

High school graduation or equivalent required with some college and/or basic insurance courses preferred. A minimum of two years of progressively responsible administrative or technical experience, preferably in an insurance claims office is needed.

Customer Service & Billing Representative

This position, in the Accounting Department, is responsible for the timely and accurate processing of billing duties and providing professional, high-level customer service to policyholders, primarily via telephone.

Duties for this position include:

  • manages invoices and notices of cancellations;
  • performs daily audits on AR aging and credit balance reports;
  • prepares and processes refunds daily;
  • prepares daily invoice reports, sorts through printed batched invoices, and prepares for delivery to mailroom;                                     
  • reviews billing to ensure accuracy;                                          
  • responds to incoming calls and questions;
  • provides technical support to policyholders; and
  • performs outbound courtesy calls to customers.


A minimum of two to three years of customer service, underwriting, or accounts receivable experience in an insurance or medical environment is preferred. Some college and/or basic insurance classes preferred.

Requirements include:

  • knowledge of basic accounting procedures, general office practices/procedures and telephone techniques;
  • strong communication, organizational, problem solving, and customer service skills; and
  • ability to work with frequent interruptions.


The successful candidate must be proficient in Microsoft applications and the use of various web-based applications for billing research/payment inquiries.
